Robert Gordon Monkelien –age 94 of Pocahontas, Iowa passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Countryside Care Center, Sioux City, Iowa.
Bob, the oldest son of Albert and Gena (Johnson) Monkelien, was born November 12, 1915, in Grant Township near Pocahontas. He was baptized and attended Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township near Pocahontas. Bob was confirmed June 30, 1930. He attended Grant #9 country school and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1935. On August 20, 1941, Bob married Thelma (Johnson) at Elfsborg Lutheran Church near Pomeroy. The couple spent 25 years farming west of Pocahontas. Bob retired from farming in 1968. Bob and Thelma moved to Pocahontas where they became the owners of Thelma’s Apparel, retiring in October 1983. Bob served as Pocahontas County Supervisor and on the Board of Review. He also served on the Elfsborg Lutheran Church Board, the Cemetery Board and was a Trustee for Grant Township. Bob sold hail insurance for German Mutual Insurance Company. He was a member of Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce. He also sold and repaired Kirby vacuums. Bob and Thelma together enjoyed woodworking—Bob did the cutting and Thelma did the varnishing/painting.
Survivors include his children Gary (Gloria) Monkelien of Sioux City, Dean (Melissa) Monkelien of Fairhaven, MD, Janet (William) Wing of McLean, VA, and David (Renita) Monkelien of Sioux Falls, SD, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Delores Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Thelma in 2007, brother Raymond and his sisters Lyla Bailey, Gladys Perry and Ardyce Johnson, half-brother Wilfred Monkelien, half-sister Evelyn Terry, brothers-in-law Donald Bailey, Howard Perry, Milton, Ervin and Archie Johnson, and sisters-in-law Violet Nelson, Vi Johnson and Marlene Monkelien.
