Dr. James P. Slattery, 73, of Omaha, NE, and Pocahontas, IA, was born in Atkinson, NE on February 26, 1938. James Patrick Slattery was the son of Thomas and Claire Connors Slattery. He received his education at St Joseph’s Catholic School in Atkinson and graduated in 1956. He began his undergraduate studies at Notre Dame and, in 1957, transferred to Creighton University where he went on to obtain his medical degree in 1964. Following an internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Omaha, NE, he served in the US Army as Captain with service in Vietnam and an honorable discharge in 1967. He then entered solo practice in family medicine in Pocahontas, IA where he devoted 39 years to his patients. He was a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Practice. After retiring from medical practice, he continued to serve Creighton Medical School on the Admissions Committee.
On June 30, 1962, at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge, IA, he married Mary Ann Knudson, the love of his life. He cherished his wife, eight children, twenty-five grandchildren and the times together. Other interests include hunting, golf, high school athletics, Hawkeye football and Creighton Bluejay basketball. He was active leader in both civic and church organizations. He and Mary Ann were charter members of the Creighton Parents Council. Other boards he served on were Diocesan DDP campaign, Creighton Medical School Advisory Board, Pocahontas Booster Club.
Dr. Slattery is survived by his wife Mary Ann; Son Dr. Patrick and Anne Slattery of Spencer, IA and children Lydia, Sean, Michael, Colin, and James; Son Dr. Michael and Dona Slattery of Carroll, IA and children Lucas, Claire, Collin, and Mara; Son Mark and Julie Slattery of Omaha, NE and children Erin, Megan, and Emma; Son William and Dawn Slattery of Lakeville, MN and children Caraline, Timothy and Mallory; Son Dr. Terrence and Jennifer of Omaha, NE and children Thomas, Matthew, Catherine, and Jane; Son Timothy and Emily of Nashville, TN and children Seamus, Marguerite, and Charles; Son Joseph and Carlene Slattery of Chicago, IL and children Ella, Clara, and Grace; Daughter and “favorite child” Molly Colleen of Kansas City, MO; Brother Dr. William and Jane Slattery of Boise, ID; Sister Mary and Jerry McKay of Omaha, NE; Sister-in-law Beverly Slattery of Sacramento, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. Thomas Slattery.
