August "Augie" Poppen, age 91, of Pocahontas, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at his home near Pocahontas, Iowa.

August Konrad Poppen was born on August 12, 1933, in Westersander, Germany. He was the son of Konrad and Johanna (Harms) Poppen. Augie completed his education in Germany then immigrated to the United States in 1955. He lived in Omaha, NE for a time before settling in Pocahontas. On November 29, 1964, Augie was united in marriage to Patricia Lange at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. Augie always told Pat, "You're the best thing that ever happened to me." The couple raised their family in Pocahontas where Augie worked as a contractor. He did masonry and built beautiful homes and businesses in Pocahontas and surrounding communities.

Augie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, coyote and would often travel to South Dakota and Wyoming to hunt antelope and prairie dogs. He loved to garden and had all kinds of fruit trees and berry bushes. He also enjoyed target and trap shooting. Augie especially enjoyed the time he spent traveling to see his family in Germany and spending time with his daughters and granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Pocahontas; daughters, Sonya (Jon) Engels of Sioux Falls, SD, Jackie Poppen of Omaha, NE, and Pam (Steve) Bunda of Omaha, NE; granddaughters, Olivia and Anna Engels, Jaedan and Jorja Bunda and Adrina Poppen, and son-in-law, Tony Holland of Northrop, MN.

Augie was preceded in death by his daughter, Veronica Holland; parents, Konrad and Johanna Poppen; sisters, Gazine and Threse, and brothers, Johan and Wilhelm.
