Betty L. Schmidt – age 92, of Pocahontas, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Betty Lou Schmidt was born on August 25, 1927, in Norfolk, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Ernest and Emma (Sommerfield) Schmidt. Betty graduated from Ireton High School. She went on to attend a business college for one year. She worked as a school teacher for several years and then as a bookkeeper for the LeMars Savings Bank. She then moved to Pocahontas where she operated the Rialto Theatre, worked for the Pocahontas County Treasures Office and then worked as a bookkeeper for Ray's Plumbing and Heating. In 1984, Betty married Wayne McKown in Pocahontas. The couple settled in Pocahontas. Wayne passed away in 1996 and Betty continued to make her home in Pocahontas.

Betty was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, and the church circle. She also taught Sunday School and played the church organ for 25 years. Betty enjoyed music and did a lot of volunteering over the years at the Pocahontas Manor.

Survivors include her step daughter, Carol (Duane) Harvey of Miller, SD; step-son-in-law, Howard Ammerman of Oak Park, CA and many grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne and parents, Ernest and Emma and step daughter, Kathy Ammerman.
