Bonnie J. Shimon, age 89, passed away on Tuesday June 30, 2020, at her home in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Bonnie Jean Flaherty was born on February 17, 1931, in her family's farm home east of Rolfe, Iowa, to Leo and Beatrice (Bruce) Flaherty. She attended a one-room school through the eighth grade and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1948. After graduating she was a secretary at Beckord's Hatchery in Rolfe while also helping her dad on the farm.

In 1947 she met John Shimon at a toboggan party at Avery's hill east of Rolfe. On February 10, 1950, they were married at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Rolfe. John and Bonnie then moved to a farm south of Rolfe where they raised their five sons. Tim or Timmie (as she was nick-named by her father) was John's right-hand-helper with the grain and livestock farm, which was work she dearly loved. In 1970 they moved in to Rolfe and continued farming. John and Bonnie retired from farming in 1988, due to John's failing health, and moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. They moved to Pocahontas in 1996. John passed away in February 2015.

Bonnie was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Missionary Ladies, and Catholic Ladies Society at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. She enjoyed the social and quilting time with the "ladies." Card and board games, especially with her grandchildren, were always great entertainment. She was an excellent scratch cook and excelled with her pie making abilities. A sign hung in her kitchen that said "Grandmas Never Run Out of Hugs or Cookies," and she lived that every day.

She is survived by sons; Leo (Carla) of Pocahontas, Iowa; Bill (Louise) of Perry, Iowa; Mike (Betty) of Dalhart, Texas; Tom of Wichita, Kansas; and Rich (Jennifer) of Livermore, Iowa. Grandchildren April, Abby, Katie, Jediah, Eden, Travis, Taylor, Caleb, Kim, and Cassie. Her surviving great-grandchildren are Lynn, Hannah, Jackson, Mia, Michael, Alex, Morgan, Lily, McKennlie, Harper and Luke. Her sisters are Jeannette (Arnold) Brodale; Jeanne Hetland, Jacqueline (James) Hilleary.

Preceding her in death were husband John, parents Leo and Beatrice Flaherty, grandsons Brandon and Jerimiah, and granddaughter Josiah.
