Carol VanHorn, age 71 of Lake City, IA, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Stewart Memorial  Community Hospital in Lake City.  Carol Jean was born on April 10, 1952, to parents Donald and Phyllis (Westering) Janssen in Lake City.  She grew up in town where she attended grade school and graduated from Lake City High School with the class of 1971.

On March 9, 1984, Carol was united in marriage to Vern VanHorn at Lake City Union Church.  This union was blessed with three children: Danyell, Dana, and Samantha.  Together they raised their family in Lake City where Carol worked at Shady Oaks Nursing Home for nine years and later worked at Opportunity Living for 23 years up until her retirement on March 31, 2017.

Carol enjoyed sitting on her porch and people-watching, sewing, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. You could also catch her enjoying an ice-cold Milwaukee's Best Light.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Dana (Megan) VanHorn of Rockwell City, IA, and Samantha (Alec) Ellis of Lake City, IA; grandchildren: Korbin, Lennox, Huxley, and Saylor VanHorn, and Bristol and Charlotte Ellis; siblings: Jim (Sue) Janssen of Lake City, IA, Judy (Steve) Boedecker of Twin Lakes, IA, and Jay (Dixie) Janssen of Denison, IA. Nieces and Nephews: Brian Boedecker, Tiffany (Chris) Green, Kyle (Lindsay) Boedecker, Zach (Sheenie) Janssen, Matthew Janssen, and Paige Janssen.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Vern Vanhorn; daughter Danyell; parents Don and Phillis Janssen; Clarence and Pearl Westering; and in-laws.
