Catherine B. Shors, one of Iowa's oldest and most loved residents, entered into eternal life on October 28, 2019 in Pocahontas, IA., more than 106 years after she was born in the same small Iowa community.

Also known as Cathie, Mom, Gram and Grandma Grapes, she was born May 20, 1913 to Albert J. and Genevieve Murphy Shaw, the 3rd and middle child. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1930, in the middle of the depression and spent the next five years switching off with her sister on who would be in college and who would work in their father's law office. She earned a business degree from the University of Iowa in 1935 and landed a much sought after job with the State Superintendent of Public School because of her speedy typing.

She married George Shors on June 9, 1936. Cathie and George had four children: John, Sue, Dick and David. After the kids were born, Cathie split her time between raising the children and working in their law office: George A Shors Attorney at Law. If you grew up in the 1940s and '50s as a son or daughter of Cathie and George Shors you were one of the luckiest kids in Iowa. Their love and support were steadfast in everything you did, whether it was a baseball game or a life challenge. Their spirit of adventure was infectious and their work ethic and loyalty to family and friends were models for a rewarding and successful life. Her grandchildren also felt lucky to be part of the family and remember that sitting down at a table with her meant she'd, "deal you a hand," convince you to go for a quick swim before dinner, or, if you were lucky, entertain you with an Irish drinking ballad. More importantly was her loving acceptance of all, her lack of concern over anything material, and her candy bag in the cupboard that she always shared.

After retiring, she and George spent winters in Sun City where her husband died in 1987, after over 50 years of marriage. After his death, she spent her winters in Texas and many summer weekends at Okoboji with her family and her growing brood of great grandchildren. Her great grandchildren remember her jumble puzzles solved each morning, her willingness to both put worms on hooks and clean their catch of the day, and solitaire, gin rummy, and spades being played from sun up to sun down.

Her true loves were her Catholic faith, spending time with her family, swimming at her lake home, playing cards, and reading murder mysteries. Her claims to fame were being one of the first ones in Okoboji each year, receiving an award for being the oldest living Hawkeye and making cinnamon rolls so good that they will be talked about posthumously for years. Cathie was a member of Res. Parish Ladies Society, charter member of CD of A, Foresters, and two bridge clubs.

She is survived by 3 children, John, (Patsy), Des Moines, IA; Sue, Pocahontas, IA; David (Crystal) Helena, MT; 10 grandchildren, Cathy (Arthur Siu); Deanna (Scott Francis); John (Allison); Tom (Kim Starr); Matt (Liz); Luke (Madhuri); Andrew (Heidi); Ben (Chelsea); Emmy (Josh Bean); Michael Hahn (Lisa); and 22 great grandchildren: Ben and Holly Siu; Taylor Carter and Ella Francis; Sophie and Jack Shors; Charlie, Sam and Oliver Shors; Shyamana and Khelan Shors; Jake, Allie and Sammi Shors; Annie and Owen Shors; Roxy and Axel Bean; Josh Hahn, Payton and Mackenzie McMillan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ann Shors, her brothers, Frank, Albert and Bob and her sister, Eleanor. Cathie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a peacemaker, a humble soul who never complained, and a genuine queen of hearts.
