Leonard "Dale" Johnston – age 94 of Pocahontas, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Arlington Place in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Leonard Dale Johnston was born August 18, 1926, to Oscar C. and Mary Ellen "Mayme" (Sennett) Johnston. Dale was born at home on the family farm. He had two younger sisters.

He graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1944 and started farming with his dad. In 1946, he married Dorothy King at Trinity Lutheran Church. Two children were born to them, Susan and David. Dale held several council offices there. Trinity closed years later.

Dale and Dorothy settled on the family farm near Pocahontas where they farmed and raised their family. They moved to town in 1984 after their house was built. Dale continued to farm with son, David. They joined St. Peter Lutheran Church. Over the years he was a Cattlemen Association member, Farm Bureau member and a Lions Club member. He enjoyed Lions and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Dale and Dorothy started spending winters in the south in their 50's and settled in Arizona where they made many friends. Dale loved fishing with two grandsons and David, being in his boat and watching all the television fishing shows he could find.

Dale is survived by Susan (Jerry) Olson of Des Moines and David (Bev) Johnston of Pocahontas; special friend & companion, Gen Schoon; grandchildren, Jessica (Tony), Barry (Lyndsi), Jody, Brett, Deanna (Lena), Julie (Eric), Tony (Carey), Linnea (Mike); great-grandchildren, Reece, Ava, Grant, Carly, Avery, Leah, Logan, Tycin, Ella, Hallee, Rylan, Ben and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife, Dorothy in 2009; his parents; sisters, Ruth Crotty and Betty Mell; brothers-in-law, Bob Crotty and Jack Mell and Dorothy's three sisters and their husbands.

Dale's family would like to thank the staff of Arlington Place and St. Croix Hospice for their special care of Dale, and to Powers Funeral Home and Pastor John Mayer for their assistance with Dale's funeral service.

Memorials are requested in Dale's name to the St. Peter Lutheran Church.
