Darwin Paul Shimon, age 92, of Pocahontas, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Norwalk Nursing and Rehab in Norwalk, Iowa.

Darwin was born May 28, 1932 on a farm near Havelock. He was the son of Lester William Shimon and Esther Agnes (Johnson) Shimon. He attended school in Havelock. He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the U.S. Army on February 19, 1953. He served as a Speed Radio Operator at Kitzingen, Germany. He was honorably discharged February 17, 1955. Darwin farmed his entire life in the Havelock area with his brothers.

Darwin married Carol Beth Strong on July 12, 1969 at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Pocahontas. They lived on the farm at the northeast corner of Havelock. He was a member of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, a 9 year member of the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board, 15 year member of the Farmers Co-op (Pocahontas, Havelock, and Plover), 30 year member of the Havelock Fire Department, and a lifetime member of the Havelock Amvets.

He retired from farming in 1998. In 2003, Darwin and Carol moved into Pocahontas. They enjoyed wintering in Orlando, Florida for several years.

Darwin enjoyed fishing, and after moving into town, he enjoyed taking care of his many hanging baskets and other flowers. He especially enjoyed having coffee at the Pro Service Center in Poky.

Survivors include his children Bret, Becky, and Sandra (Alex), grandchildren Caitlyn, Teyla, and Ava, brother Dean (Ilene) Shimon, sister-in-law Diane Strong, and several nieces and nephews.

Darwin was preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents Lester and Esther, sister Eloise, brothers Donald and Darold, sister-in-law Naomi Wood, and brothers-in-law Dean Strong and Wesley Wood.
