Don. W. Shimon – age 83, of Pharr, Texas, formerly of Havelock, Iowa, passed away following complications from cancer treatment in Pharr on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Don was born April 15, 1935, in Havelock, to Lester and Esther Shimon. He went to school in Havelock and began an early farming life. Donald married Mary Culbertson of Emmetsburg on April 23, 1956, and they lived and farmed in the Havelock community.

Don was also on the Havelock Fire Department for 35 years, a board member and former president of the Northwest Telephone Coop for 26 years in Havelock, the Havelock Boy Scout Master for several years, and a rural mail carrier for many years. In Don's retirement he was known as a master wood carver in the Pharr/McAllen, TX area. His wife Mary passed away in 1990 and he married Delores Backstrom on Feb. 2, 1991.

Don is survived by his wife Delores; daughter Louise Olson (Steve), Janesville WI; sons, James (Judy) of Pocahontas, Michael of Havelock, Daniel of Laurens, and Lawerance of Ankeny; step children, Deb (Randy) Hansch, Monroe, and Dale Backstrom, Des Moines, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; son, Steven (Jamie), Marshalltown; and stepson, Dennis Backstrom (Cathy), Mallard.
