Elaine Louise "Recker" Harriman, age 83, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and family. Born on July 30, 1942, on the family farm near Alton, Iowa, Elaine was the middle of eight children. She, along with her siblings, attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Alton.

After graduating high school, Elaine attended beauty school in Sioux City, where she began her career as a hairdresser. Though she only practiced for a short time, it was clear even then that her greatest passion was not her profession, but the life she would build with her family.

Elaine married James "Jim" Harriman, on January 13, 1962, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa. Together they shared a life that kept them connected to family and northwest Iowa. Jim always said, "you can take the girl out of the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the girl." In 1972, they settled in Laurens, Iowa, with their four young children. Their home in Laurens became the heart of the family — a place where their children grew up and many cherished memories were made.

Elaine held several clerical positions over the years, but work was never what defined her. Her greatest joys came from time spent with her children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, her beloved siblings, and her many dear friends. She was known for her delicious cooking including her famous potato salad and cream puffs.

She loved long walks, a nice glass of wine, dining al fresco especially near water, and garden fresh tomatoes. A quiet afternoon with a good book brought her peace, and her unwavering Catholic faith sustained her throughout life's joys and sorrows — especially in the 25 years since Jim's passing in 2000.

Elaine is survived by her loving children: Glen (Susan) Harriman; Bridget (Dave) Funk and children Justin (Alyssa) Bailey, Cory (Amy Gustafson) Bailey, and Brady (Madison) Bailey; Carl Harriman and his children Devin Harriman and Nellie Harriman; and Mae (Dan) Hingtgen and their children Emma (Wyatt) Terpstra and Annie (Alli Tankersley) Hingtgen.

She was a proud great-grandmother to eight great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.

Elaine is also survived by her siblings: Mary Lou Bauler, Jeannette Curry, Gayle (Chuck) Schmidt, and Ed (Renae) Recker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents; and siblings Bonnie Recker (infant), Colane Recker, Karen Ruden, and Richard Recker.

Elaine's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Spencer Municipal Hospital for their compassion, dignity, and grace during her final days. Their care made all the difference, and the family will be forever thankful.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on October 11, 2025 at Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Laurens, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 from 9:00 – 10:00 at the church before the Mass.

Elaine's life was a testament to quiet strength, kindness, and the enduring power of family. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered in every tomato ripened on the vine, every walk in the sunshine, and every table filled with laughter and food.
