Elfrieda H. Saylor – age 80, of Pocahontas, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa.
Elfrieda Helen Hoefing was born October 7, 1938, in Gilmore City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jacob and Dorothy (Weaver) Hoefing. She graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1956 and went on to attend Wartburg College in Waverly and then graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. On June 5, 1960, Elfrieda was united in marriage to John Saylor in Gilmore City. The couple lived on different farms in the Havelock and Plover areas from 1960 until 1989 when they then moved into Pocahontas. Throughout these years, Elfrieda worked at the Havelock-Plover, Rolfe, and Pocahontas schools as an educator. She also helped her husband on the farm. She served on the Havelock–Plover Booster Club for several years and was also a member of KSK Club in Plover for over 50 years.
Elfrieda was a 4-H member as a child, and continued her love of 4-H as a leader of the Powhatan Squaws 4-H Club for many years. She also served on the Pocahontas and State 4-H Councils and was later inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame. She served as the Pocahontas County Fair Manager for several years. Elfrieda was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and vacation bible school teacher. She was also a member of the Church Council and the Women's Church Circle.
In 1989, Elfrieda was elected as the 1st President to the Western Iowa Synodical Women's Organization where she served for 12 years and as a board member for 4 years. She also served as Chairman of the Dorcas Cluster of the Women's Organization.
Some of her favorite hobbies included reading, sewing, doing crossword puzzles and word searches, watching the Hallmark channel and watching the Hawkeye and Cyclone basketball and football games. While at Wesley Acres she enjoyed several activities; including beading, cooking, Bible study and her favorite, BINGO!
Survivors include her daughter, Deb Saylor of Waukee; son, Mark Saylor of Creston; grandchildren, Emma, Olivia and Luke Saylor of Creston and sister, Mary Emholtz of Des Moines, IA.
Elfrieda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John and sister, Joanne Bettis.
