Elmer Edwin Block, age 85, of Pocahontas, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the Laurens Care Center in Laurens, Iowa, which he called his home away from home.

Elmer Edwin Block was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on December 5, 1939, to parents Edward and Edna (Rosenboom) Block. Elmer attended school in Palmer and Manson through his junior year. When Elmer was 14 years old, his father passed away. He then started doing farm work for his mother and other siblings. As he got older, he worked as a mechanic in a shop in Palmer.

On February 7, 1960, he married Marilyn Joachims. The farming continued and Elmer did a lot of mechanic work on the farm, along with the field work and harvesting. He started working for the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1965, where he worked for 26 years. In 1974, Elmer and Marilyn moved to Pocahontas where they continued to raise their family.

Elmer enjoyed car races, watching sports on TV and attending sporting events at the local high school. Most of all, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was also a member of the Lions Club.

Elmer began a lawn mower repair shop and drove semi for his brother-in-law for several years. Elmer's hobby was working on the lawn mowers. He so enjoyed visiting with his lawn mower and coffee buddies.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Pocahontas; children, David (Lynn) Block of Bondurant; Nancy (Ken) Allen of Pocahontas; Karen Smith of Des Moines and Steven (Amy) Block of Aiken, SC; grandchildren, Portia Allen, Tenicia (Nathan) Hanselman, Misha Smith, Patrick (Leah) Allen, Josh (Hannah) Block, Morgan Block, Nicholas Block, Alexander Block and Ashton Block; great-grandchildren, Lincoln Hanselman, Tatum Block, Koen Block, Miya Hanselman and Marshall Allen, and siblings, Mary Baker of Fort Dodge, Robert (Barb) Block of Manson and Diane Isaacs of Rockwell City.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Edna Block, and brother, Glenn Block.
