Gayle Lloyd Johnson

Gayle L. Johnson, age 84, of Pomeroy, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Gayle Lloyd Johnson was born January 22, 1942 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was the son of Lloyd and Florence (Gustafson) Johnson. Gayle grew up on a farm between Pocahontas and Pomeroy and graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1960. He continued his education at Wartburg College for a short time, then at the Business College in Mankato, MN where he earned his degree in accounting. Gayle worked for Del Monte Foods in Wells, MN and while in Minnesota, he met Janet Miller. Gayle and Janet were united in marriage on June 6, 1970 in Dawson, MN. Gayle returned to Iowa in 1965 where he worked for the Pilot Tribune Paper in Storm Lake and they started their family shortly thereafter. The couple lived on an acreage near Pomeroy until they moved into town. After his time at the Pilot Tribune, Gayle began to farm with his father. He farmed by himself for many years until the late 1980s when he slowed down the operation. He continued to farm and worked a variety of sales positions, including Peterson Motors in Storm Lake. He enjoyed staying busy and never considered himself retired.

Gayle was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Newell where he enjoyed singing solos and in the church choir. He loved to tinker, watch westerns and NASCAR (especially Jeff Gordon), fishing, playing horse shoes, raising horses, spending time with his children's dogs, and especially attending his grandchildren's activities.

Survivors include his wife, Janet of Pomeroy; children, Vonda (T.J.) Bindel of Pocahontas, Darren (Araceli) Johnson of Holstein and Brenda Johnson of Pomeroy; grandchildren, Keaton and Kolton Bindel, Branden and Lea Johnson, Michael (Hannah) Rebollozo and Priscilla (Em) Rebollozo; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Arlys (Dale) Johnson of rural Pomeroy, and 5 nieces and nephews.

Gayle was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Florence.

The family requests that fresh floral arrangements be given instead of plants.
