Genevieve "Gen" Schoon – age 94 of Pocahontas, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Arlington Place in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Arlene Genevieve Thompson was born February 1, 1930 on a farm at Lone Rock, Iowa. The daughter of Maurice and Elizabeth (Hinze) Thompson. She began school at a country school at Burt, Iowa and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1947. Gen worked as a nurse's aide at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge.

On February 19, 1950, Genevieve was married to Ernest Schoon of Palmer, Iowa at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's. Ernie and Gen then made their home in Pocahontas. They were the proud parents of four children David, Roger, Diane and Ruth. They became members of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas where Gen took an active part in the Women of the ELCA, taught Sunday School and was a church secretary for 8 years.

Along with raising their children and attending their activities Gen worked many years at the Ben Franklin Store and was often Ernie's helper in the tree business. Gen loved gardening and canning, also sewing and making quilts. Her passion was with flowers and searching their families' genealogy. She treasured time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she loved having family gatherings at their home, especially holidays and birthdays. Ernie and Gen enjoyed many years of traveling around the country in their RV, or going on bus tours, where they made many lasting friends. They wintered in Weslaco, Texas for 13 years. She lost her dearest friend, her husband Ernie July 22, 2016, they had been married 66 years.

Survivors include her sons David (Barbara) Schoon of Sweetwater, Tennessee and Roger (Janet) Schoon of Twin Lakes, Iowa and daughters Diane (Paul) Havick of Wickenburg, Arizona and Ruth (K.C.) Perin of Apopka, Florida. She is also survived by ten grandchildren Heather (Matt) Epps, Angela Schoon, Tom Beckel, Kelli (Will) Gould, Travis Schoon, Adam Schoon, Lindsey (Dan) English, Megan (Jay) Dominguez, Melissa (Josh) Siress and Evan (Taylor) Havick. Also 13 great-grandchildren Reyann Epps, Gage Beckel, Kyler, Madelynn and Kinsley Siress, Zoey, Avery and Connor Schoon, Hadley, Harper and Corbet Gould, Mia and Olivia Dominquez. Gen is also survived by sisters Ersel Rushton of Farnhamville, Iowa, Geneva Jessip of Chariton, Iowa, Joyce Stringfellow of Punta Gorda, Florida, and Pauline Rodgers of Fort Myers, Florida. Also sister-in-law Phyllis Thompson of Des Moines and brother-in-law Leroy Schoon of Spirit Lake and many nieces and nephews.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Ray Thompson, two grandchildren Carrie and Ryan Beckel, and also four brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
