George A. Shimon, age 88, of Rolfe, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Laurens Care Center in Laurens, Iowa.

George Allen Shimon was born on July 2, 1936, in rural Rolfe, IA. He was the eldest son of twelve children born to Vivian (Callon) Shimon and Leslie Shimon. He loved farming all his life with his father and then passed it down to his two sons.

He attended a country school, Roosevelt No. 2, which was adjacent to where he lived. He talked about having to run down and start the furnace in the school during the winter, then climb the fence, run home, eat breakfast, and run back to school. He attended school through the 8th grade.

On January 31, 1959, he married Kathleen Miller at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Rolfe. They settled on a farm southwest of Rolfe. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Knox, KY where their oldest daughter, Wanda was born. Because his father became ill, he received a hardship discharge from the Army. George was a part of the Army Reserve in Pocahontas until 1963.

He was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, having attended St. Peter and Paul's Church during his childhood. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casinos and spending the last 25 years out West in the winter. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen, children, Wanda (Bryan) Rittgers of Havelock, IA Sheryl (Mark) Detert of Pawleys Island, SC, Christy (Doug) Kral of Des Moines, IA David (Elizabeth) Shimon of Granada, MN, and Brian (Amy) Shimon of Havelock, IA; eleven grandchildren, Rachel (Kevin) Poppen, Christina (Jacob) Hennager and Ryan Rittgers, Adam Detert and Alyssa (David Neff) Detert, Jessie Kral, Natalie (Mike) Ankeny and Anthony Shimon, Danielle (Scott) Reeves, Chelsey (Reed) Westerman and Nelson (Cara) Shimon; great-grandchildren, Vivian, Aurora, Charlotte, Rhett and Beau Poppen, Nora and Cameron Hennager, Harper, Kennedy, Emersyn, and Brielle Reeves, Harvey and Pierson Westerman, Jamison, and Carmen Shimon; siblings, Donna (Jerry) Halder of Pocahontas, Linda Leon of Dallas, TX and Jon Shimon of Livermore, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Ardoth, Yvonnne, Judy, Janet, Carolyn, James "Joker", Jerry, Barbara, and great-granddaughter, Grace Ankeny.
