Joan A. Perry – age 90 of Pocahontas, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020, at the Arlington Place in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Joan Ann Schmidt was born on January 11, 1930 in West Bend, Iowa. She was the daughter of Michael and Marie (Jennings) Schmidt. She graduated from Rolfe High School in 1947 and went on to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls graduating in 1949. After graduating she taught elementary education in Manson. On August 5, 1951 Joan was united in marriage to Virgil DeWall in Rolfe. The couple lived in Pocahontas for a short time before settling on their farm south of Pocahontas. Throughout her career Joan taught elementary education in Laurens, Manson, Pomeroy, Mallard and Pocahontas. Virgil passed away in August of 1977. Joan continued teaching until retiring in the late 1970s. On January 15, 1980 Joan was united in marriage to James Perry in Pocahontas. The couple lived on the Perry family farm near Havelock until 1992 when Jim retired from farming and they moved to Pocahontas. Jim passed away in June of 2018 and Joan continued to make her home in Pocahontas.

Joan was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, WELCA, TTT and was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed camping, traveling, golfing, gardening, painting and playing cards. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her family.

Survivors include her children, Dan (Laura) DeWall, Dave (Laurie) DeWall and Jane (Rod) Stoulil, all of Pocahontas; step-children Kaye (Willie Pico) Perry of Emmetsburg, Randy Perry of Emmetsburg, and Annette (Joe) Hiscocks of Britt; grandchildren, Ebony, Erin, Cody, Niki, Heather, Megan, Sarah, Kris, Amy, Carrie, Brent, Tracy and Kal; 16 great-grandchildren and a brother, Robert (Shirley) Schmidt of Mundelin, IL. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Virgil and Jim, and nephew Barry Schmidt.
