Kathryn "Kay" Hoffert – age 99, of Pocahontas, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Kathryn Ruth Wolfe was born January 21, 1923 in Windom, Minnesota to parents Albert and Iris (Early) Wolfe. She was the second born after her brother Raymond and before her sisters Shirley and Joann.

The family moved to a farm near Rolfe Iowa where she went to Rolfe High School and graduated in 1941. In 1943, Kay enlisted in the United States Navy like her father and brother had done. She was one of only 730 women to be selected as a cryptologist in the W.A.V.E.S., which became known as the American Women Code Breakers of World War II – The Code Girls.

After she was honorably discharged she returned to Iowa where she married her husband Donald Hoffert. They lived in the Pocahontas area where Don did farm work and Kay worked at the former grocery, the Graystone. They eventually relocated to Estherville, Iowa, where their son, Tommy, was born. Don worked at Leighton Supply and Kay worked at Anthony's in Estherville. They relocated to Spirit Lake where Kay worked for Berkley Industries. They enjoyed their time living on the lake but eventually relocated to Moorland where Kay worked at the Post Office.

After they retired in 1991, they moved to a beautiful wooded acreage outside of Pittsburg, Missouri. They were very active in square dancing and in the Pomme De Terre United Methodist Church. They moved back to Laurens in 2005 and eventually to Pocahontas, where Kay was a member of Hope United Methodist Church. Kay was living at the Pocahontas Manor till her passing.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Hoffert of Moorland; grandsons, Timothy Hoffert and Michael (Meagan) Hoffert; great-granddaughter, Violet Hoffert; sister-in-law, Kaye Olson of Pocahontas and 27 nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Iris Wolfe; husband, Donald; brother, Raymond and sisters, Shirley and JoAnn.
