Leland J. "Bud" Hawley, 97, of Laurens, passed away on April 23, 2021 at Laurens Care Center. He was the son of Charles F. and Lela (Stover) Hawley, who died at his birth. His aunties called him "Buddy" until he was named Leland after his mother. Buddy was raised by his grandparents Fred K. and Henrietta B. Hawley.

After graduating from Laurens High School, Bud attended Grinnell College before joining the U.S. Army where he was assigned to medical school in Little Rock, AR, and where he met and married Beverly (Buckwalter). Upon the death of his granddad in 1945, Bud returned to Laurens to become the third generation in the family business, Hawley Insurance Agency. During their 28-year marriage Bud and Bev raised their 4 children (Cynthia, Fred, Gloria and Mary Kay) in Laurens. In 1987 he married Jeanette (Oleson) Johnson and they enjoyed 34 years of marriage until her passing in March of this year.

Bud was an active life-long member of Laurens United Methodist Church and a Past Master of Masonic Grace Lodge #519, a Master Mason and 32 ^nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a Shriner with Abu Bekr Temple.

He was active in many insurance industry associations, including Pocahontas County Mutual Insurance Association (board chair), Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance Association (board member), Iowa Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (president), and Iowa Mutual Agents Association (president).

Bud contributed to the Laurens community throughout his life by serving as treasurer of Laurens Community School District, president of the Chamber of Commerce, many positions with Lions International, president of Laurens Development Corporation, board member and a term as chair of LMPC Board of Trustees from 1979 to 1997, and commander of American Legion Larimer-McCabe Post #24. He was a founding member of the Laurens Golf and Country Club.

He enjoyed travel and visited all 50 states, 48 by car along with much of Canada, and also took trips to Europe and Australia. He enjoyed playing golf and walleye fishing in northern Minnesota. A loyal Democrat and proud descendant of Iowa Pioneers, Bud was honored by his stewardship of The Hawley Home Place, an Iowa Century Farm since 1981.

Bud is survived by his daughter Cynthia Hawley, son Fred Hawley, sons-in-law Bill Grice and Dale Larson, grandchildren Trent Larson, Brynn Beal and Allison Strong, 4 great-grandchildren, sister Gretchen Woodin, and nephews Charles Appleton and Bret Appleton.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and special stepmother Leone, favorite aunt Martha Huddleston, his wife Jeanette, his former wife Beverly Shaffer, daughters Gloria Grice and Mary Kay Larson, sister and brother-in-law Jane and Jay Appleton, brother-in-law Don Woodin and nephews Daniel and David Woodin.
