Lloyd L. Pohl - age 100, of Rolfe, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the West Bend Health and Rehabilitation in West Bend, Iowa.
Lloyd Lester Pohl was born on October 15, 1918, near Manson, Iowa. He was the son of Charles and Florence (Meier) Pohl. Lloyd attended grade school in Barnum until 1928 when he moved with his family to Havelock, where he attended Havelock High School. On February 17, 1941, Lloyd was united in marriage to Velma Brock at Pocahontas. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army – Air Force from 1943 - 1946 during WW II. He was an airplane mechanic working on B-17 bombers and was injured when an airplane tire exploded. Lloyd suffered some permanent hearing loss and also lost his sight temporarily. Following his discharge, Lloyd and Velma farmed near Spencer, Curlew and Rolfe. In 1991, they retired and moved into Rolfe. Velma passed away in September of 2009 and Lloyd continued to make his home in Rolfe.
Lloyd was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the board for several years. He was also a 60 year member of the Mallard American Legion. Lloyd enjoyed reading, golfing and fishing. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan, especially Iowa Basketball and he loved to watch the Chicago Bulls.
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce Jensen of Des Moines; son, Jerry (Anne) Pohl of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Laura Holmes and Samantha Pohl and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Point and Melissa Point.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; a grandson, Christopher Holmes; brothers, Charles Pohl and Orville Pohl and a sister, Violet Nomann.
