Marcella "Marcy" Smith-Schoberg, age 97, of Pocahontas, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Marcella Ann was the oldest child of June (Slutter) and James W. Bartosh. She was born May 11, 1928, in their farm home in Roosevelt Twp. The family attended Sts. Peter and Paul's Parish in Pocahontas where Marcella received the sacraments, was a choir member and organist.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School and in 1947 earned an Elementary Teacher's Certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College. Her early teaching positions were in Dayton, Ft. Dodge, Ware and Mallard. In 1971, she received a BA in Education from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. In all, she spent 30 years teaching elementary students in the area including 23 years in the Pocahontas Community School district, retiring in 1989. Marcy loved teaching and had a passion for the profession. She cherished her life long teacher friendships and was a lifetime member of the NEA. On June 7, 1948, she married Clifford Smith in Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. They were the parents of 6 children. Clifford passed away Jan. 23, 1998. They were married 49 years and 7 months. On April 30, 1999, Marcy and Earl Schoberg were married. They enjoyed many years together and traveled extensively when they were able. Earl passed away Jan. 5, 2019 and Marcy continued to make her home in Pocahontas.

After the merger of the Catholic churches in Pocahontas, Marcy actively served Resurrection of Our Lord parish as lay minister, lector and choir member. She was an advocate for Catholic education and supported the Pocahontas Catholic School. She was also a member of and served as an officer for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of its Past President's Parley. She was a member of the Ladies Society of Resurrection Parish and a prayer affiliate of the Sisters of St. Francis. She served on the Pocahontas Library board for 24 years. Marcy made many quilts for family members, enjoyed reading and loved playing cards, especially bridge. She loved her church and her country but her family was her greatest love and brought her the greatest joy.

Survivors include her children, Steven (Margie) Smith of Buckeye, AZ, Gregory (Kathy) Smith of Prescott, WI, Mary Beth (Doug) Keller of Pocahontas, Joyce (Bruce) Tewes of Hartley and Jeffrey (Stacie) Smith of Glenwood; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Shirley Bartosh.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Francis; her husbands, Clifford Smith and Earl Schoberg; grandson, Nathan Smith; parents, James W. and June Bartosh; sister and brother-in-law Mary Lou and Phil Clendenen, and brother, James D. Bartosh.
