Margaret "Peggy" Scanlan

Margaret 'Peggy' Scanlan, age 83, of Lake City, IA, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, at Accura Nursing Home in Lake City.

Peggy was born on August 12, 1943, in Carroll, IA, to W.K. and Arline (Urban) Hunter. Peggy spent her childhood in Lake View, IA, graduating from Lake View-Auburn High School in 1961. She married Alan Kruthoff in 1963, welcoming two children, Bret and Jodi. They later divorced, and in May 1984 she married Robert Scanlan, welcoming his sons Mike, Dave, and Steve to her life and expanding her circle of love.

In her early years, Peggy stayed at home raising her children. In 1982, she joined Stewart Memorial Hospital as an Executive Assistant and advanced into a marketing role before retiring in 2008.

Using her creative gifts, Peggy spent many hours at her sewing machine or in her craft area making special gifts for friends or her family. Peggy loved and cherished her family deeply. Very affectionately known to all as Granny, her grandchildren were her pride and joy, whom she loved fiercely and treasured every moment with them. She never missed acknowledging her children's and grandchildren's birthdays with a call to sing happy birthday to each of them on their special day. Her life was most complete being a mother and grandmother. Peggy showed us all how to be kind and love others by how she lived her life. She loved to love and did it well. Her legacy of faith, love, generosity, and devotion to her family and friends will inspire all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Bob Scanlan of Lake City; her children, Bret (Paula) Kruthoff of Charles City, IA, Jodi (Roger) Pieken of Lake View, IA; Mike Scanlan, Carroll, IA, Dave (Gay) Scanlan, Olathe, KS, Steve (Tara) Scanlan, Des Moines, IA; 10 grandchildren - Chris (Kelsey) Kruthoff, Bryson (Emily) Kruthoff, Tyler (Jessica) Pieken, Abbey (JD) Schimmelpfennig, Hunter (Mary) Pieken, Kennedy (Cameron) Wernimont, Josh (Lacey) Scanlan, Shawn Scanlan, Jordan (Anna) Scanlan and Leah (Zach) Boal; 10 great-grandchildren, special daughter-in-law Shelly (Brad) Anderson and nieces Heidi (Earl) Batz-Rogers, Liesl Batz and nephew Paul (Melinda) Batz. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Arline Hunter, and sister Nancy Batz. We find comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served.

Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake City, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, September 10, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake City, Iowa, with a 7:00 pm Vigil Service. A private family burial will take place right after the Memorial Mass. Peggy's wishes were to have everyone wear bright colors to her funeral! Memorials can be directed to the Stewart Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or the New Hope Village in Peggy's memory.
