Mary A. Svuba, age 85, of Laurens, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at the Laurens Care Center in Laurens, Iowa.
Mary Ann Wright was born on March 8, 1937, on the Wright family farm south of Laurens. She was the youngest of five children and the only daughter of Merle and Grace (Peterson) Wright. Mary graduated from Laurens High School in 1955 during which time she worked at Ina's (a local dress shop). On November 18th, 1956, she married Francis H. Svuba at the Laurens Methodist Church. She and Francis worked on their farm near Laurens raising cattle, hogs, and crops. Mary always tended a large garden, canned, and made preserves. Mary and Francis had four children, Danny, Diane, Darwin, and Donna. In July 1998, Francis and Mary moved to town as they semi-retired from farming. They both enjoyed golfing, traveling, and visiting family. In 2007, Francis passed away and Mary continued to make her home in Laurens.
Mary was very active in the Laurens United Methodist Church serving on many boards and committees. She was a member of UMW, Dorcas Circle and served and worked in the church kitchen at every opportunity. She was a social and active member of the Laurens Golf & Country Club organizing couples league, serving on the ladies board, and quilting for the annual breast cancer tournament. Additionally, Mary followed her passions by participating in Quilt Club, was awarded the 1996 Pocahontas Hospice Volunteer of the Year, and serving on the Laurens Care Center Board. She also enjoyed playing cards, sewing, visiting, drinking coffee with friends, and organizing class and family reunions. Mary will always be remembered for her generosity, her smile, and her sly wink.
Survivors include her children, Diane Svuba Pappas of Plano, TX, Darwin (Jerlynn) Svuba of Laurens and Donna (Phil) Breed of Beresford, SD; grandchildren, Nichelle Pappas of McKinney, TX, Brent (Erica) Svuba of Laurens, Amanda (Brad) Tendal of Sergeant Bluff; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Beckett Svuba, Ava, Kyler and Brayton Tendal and brother, Ronald Wright of Gilbert, AZ. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Francis; son, Danny; brothers, George, Lowell and Leonard Wright and their spouses, and in-laws, George and Dorothy Svuba.
