Michael P. Calligan - age 76, of Altus, Oklahoma, formerly of Rolfe, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Michael Paul Calligan was born March 8, 1944, in Fort Dodge, IA. He was the son of Harold and Rose (Schmidt) Calligan. He grew up in Rolfe and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1962. He went on to State College of Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa) graduating in 1966 then teaching English in Eagle Grove, IA. In 1968, "Uncle Sam" came calling and Mike joined the United States Air Force on January 3, 1969, attending Officer Training School in Lackland Air Force Base, TX. 2nd Lieutenant Calligan went on to Undergraduate Pilot Training at Williams AFB, AZ and earned his wings on June 8, 1970. Most of his career was spent flying the C-141 at Travis AFB, CA and Altus AFB, OK. He flew over 5,000 hours in the C-141, supporting U.S. forces around the world. Other bases where he was stationed were Maxwell AFB, AL, Scott AFB, IL and Osan Air Base, South Korea. On November 27, 1987, Michael was united in marriage to Kaye (Smith) Terwilliger at Altus, OK, where the couple settled. After AF retirement in 1990, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Calligan flew for a short time with T.W.A. and then spent the next 23 years in Altus, OK working for several aerospace companies, contracted by the Air Force to instruct AF pilots with the operation of the C-141 and the C-17. He retired in 2014.

Mike was a member of the 57th Air Force Squadren. He enjoyed golfing, playing craps and watching sports.

Survivors include his wife, Kaye of Altus, OK; sons, Bryan Calligan of St. Charles, MO and Darin Calligan of Altus, OK; a grandson, Brendan; step-daughters, Tracy (Tracy) Crail of Eagle Grove and Cathy (Tony) Bird of Coalfield, TN; step-son, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Terwilliger of Eagle Grove; 6 step-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis (Sandra) Calligan of Norman, OK, sister-in-law, Frances Calligan of Derby, KS and multiple nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Patrick Calligan.

PRIVATE FAMILY GRAVESIDE SERVICES WILL BE HELD MONDAY, APRIL 13, 2020, AT ST. MARGARET'S CEMETERY NEAR ROLFE, IOWA WITH MILITARY RITES BY THE ROLFE AMERICAN LEGION.
