Richard "Dick" Main, age 74, of Laurens, died just short of his 75th birthday on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at his daughter's home in Norfolk, Nebraska surrounded by his family.

Richard Lee Main was born on the family farm in Wayne County, Iowa on October 9, 1948, to parents James and Zelma (Gochenouer) Main. He attended school in Lineville, Iowa and graduated in 1966. Richard was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Selby in Sewal, Iowa on October 22, 1967, and started their family.  The couple would have had their 56th wedding anniversary this month.  Their marriage was a lesson for their children in friendship, love, and family.

Richard farmed dairy cows, cow/calf pairs, and crops for 7 years in southern Iowa. When the family moved to the town of Corydon, Richard was a part of the Jaycee's civic organization holding many offices and heading up several committees. He was the county mutual insurance adjuster and manager for five years in Corydon and was a coach in Baseball and Softball youth leagues. Richard and his family were also active in the Corydon Bible Church, where he was a Sunday School superintendent, song leader, deacon, and Junior High youth leader. Richard, Ann and family moved to Laurens, Iowa in 1987 to manage the Pocahontas Mutual Insurance until he retired in April 2016.  While working in insurance, Richard served a term as the head of the state insurance association.  He was part of a committee to go to Washington to talk to legislators to advocate for insurance policies.  Richard was also a part of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) and attended many state and national conventions.

Richard was very community service minded. He was involved in many organizations including Kiwanis, Laurens City Council doing many projects like the prairie preservation walking trail, Laurens City light plant board where he was Chairman from 2005-2023, the North Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association (NIMECA), the Homestead Board, Freemasons, and a longtime member of the Laurens Golf and Country Club.

Richard never met a person he couldn't stop to talk to. To him, there wasn't a person who was a stranger, and he never went anywhere where he didn't know someone. Richard loved his family deeply and was a loving husband to Ann, having taken many adventures together. Annual insurance trips turned into driving trips to see the countryside of different states and see the sites.  They also took trips to Canada fishing and to Alaska with his brother and sister-in-law and took the family to the Iowa State Fair each year, even as the family grew.

Richard loved the outdoors and shared that love with his children and grandchildren.  Whether it be walking the trails at Kindlespire park or hunting and fishing in southern Iowa. No matter what adventures he had, he would always bring a tall tale back to his friends in Laurens.  He attended countless activities, ballgames, swim meets, hockey games, and plays for his children and grandchildren.

Richard had a hobby barn where he loved to "Tinker." There he restored tractors, built a jeep for his grandchildren to drive down to the pond at family reunions, built frames for the picture puzzles at the Homestead, and tended a garden and fruit trees.

Richard is survived by his wife, Ann Main of Laurens; brother, James Main of Holden, MO; sister-in-law, Barb Main of Sedalia, MO; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Darla Main of Corydon, Iowa; his children, Schelly Main of Nevada, IA; Roger Main of Ankeny, IA; Carey (Patrick) Hopkins of Norfolk, NE; Kahla (Matthew) Wier of Windsor Heights IA; his grandchildren, Madyson (Brandon) Oberleitner, Corbin Hopkins (fiancé Cali Gregory), Ellen Main (Ethan Webb), Lindsey Donnelly, Skylar Hopkins, Tara Donnelly, Cydnee Hopkins, Emma Main, Claire Hopkins, and Lille Wier; great grandchildren Hoki and Will, and many Nieces and Nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents James and Zelma Main, brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Yvonne King, and his brother John Main.

Richard will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
