Rita Ione Schmidt, born April 6, 1951, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on June 15, 2026. She was 75 years old. Rita was a beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend. She will be remembered as a devoted and hardworking woman who loved deeply and gave generously to those around her.

Rita was the daughter of Glenn and Doris (Christensen) Siddall and was born in Laurens, Iowa. She attended Laurens High School and graduated in 1969. Rita met Robert G. Fuchs, and together they had three children: Thomas (Alison) Fuchs, Melanie (Dave) Selck, and Roberta Fuchs. Rita has stated that her greatest gifts in life were her children.

Rita later met Edward Bruce William Schmidt, and they were united in marriage on June 28, 1986. Through this union, Rita gained three stepdaughters: Michelle O'Neill, Amy (Don) Saunders, and Amber (Chad) Leitzen. Rita and Ed shared a beautiful love story that spanned 40 years. Together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. In him, she found her home, her partner, and her greatest love.

Rita dedicated over 50 years of her life working at Laurens Food Pride, where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment. She cherished being able to serve the community. She retired at the age of 72, which allowed her and Ed to spend a couple of years as snowbirds in Arizona. Outside of work, she enjoyed bowling and going to tournaments, playing softball, golfing, and riding her bike across Iowa during RAGBRAI with her sister, Neva, brother-n-law, Rene, and Ed. She loved camping and fishing with Ed and spending time with her family. Rita also treasured traveling with her childhood friends, making memories across the United States. She was deeply rooted in her faith and spent many years devoted to the United Methodist Church and her community.

In March 2026, Rita faced health challenges and was diagnosed with lung cancer along with other medical complications. With courage and grace, she chose to forgo further medical treatment and return home, where she could spend her remaining time surrounded by her loving husband and family.

Rita is survived by her husband, children, and stepdaughters; 19 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Neva (Rene) Metcalf and Rebecca (Jim) Winegarden; along with many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Doris Siddall; her siblings, Roger Siddall, Emmet Siddall, Dennis Siddall, and Cindy Longo;  son-in-law, Joseph O'Neill; and her beloved dog, Abby.

Rita's love, strength, and kindness will live on in all who knew her. Her message to others was simple and lasting: "Love one another always," because time is too precious.
