Virgil E. Behrendsen – age 94, of Pocahontas, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Arlington Place in Pocahontas, Iowa.

Virgil Eugene Behrendsen was born June 8, 1928 in Gilmore City, Iowa, to Raymond and Lucy (Bartosh) Behrendsen. He attended Gilmore City school and graduated in 1946. He joined the United States Army shortly after graduation and was stationed in Germany. When he returned home Virgil married Donna Smith on February 16, 1953 in Pocahontas. They farmed in the Gilmore City area for over 65 years. In addition to farming, Virgil was a welder for several local manufacturing companies.

Virgil was a true farmer at heart. He loved farming and he enjoyed raising livestock and animals on his farm. Virgil recently mentioned his favorite animals he had on the farm - and he had many - were his goats and buffalo. Virgil also recently mentioned his most treasured moments in life were being with his family, especially at Christmas.

Virgil loved to fish, liked polka music and dancing, enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash, was fond of his John Deere tractors, could fix about any piece of equipment and most anything else that needed fixing, and a favorite hobby of his was roasting hogs.

Virgil was a longtime member of St. John's Catholic Church in Gilmore City and was currently a member of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas. He was a long-time member of the American Legion in Gilmore City.

Virgil is survived by his daughters, Joan (Peter) Gouge of Garner, Julie Sitterle of Boone, Jeanette (Bill) Winkleblack of Panora, and son John (Shawn) Behrendsen of Gilmore City; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; brother Richard Behrendsen, Cimarron, NM; sister Lauraine Crouse, Fort Dodge; sister-in-law Marcella Schoberg, Pocahontas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, and parents Raymond and Lucy Behrendsen.
