In August of 1957, Max and Anne Powers moved to Pocahontas from Woodbine, purchasing the Rudolph Funeral Home from Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rudolph. They conducted business from the uptown location off main street until 1960, when they purchased the Troidal home on Highway 4. There, the couple raised their 11 children. In October of 1965, Max and Anne became associated with the Streit Funeral Home of Rolfe with Mrs. Loell Streit after her late husband's passing, becoming Streit-Powers Funeral Home. In 1976, a new facility was constructed in Pocahontas. Mike Loterbour of West Union joined the operation in 1980, where he and his wife, Mary, settled in Rolfe and raised their family. In 1985, Mike and Max co-purchased the Michael Funeral Home of Pomeroy from Jerry and Karen Michael. A new facility was built not far from the original site a few years later. Max and Anne’s son, Kenny Powers, returned to Pocahontas in 1990 after two years as a funeral director at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines. In June of 1994, Mike and Ken purchased the Smith Funeral Home in Laurens, becoming Smith-Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home. In 1999, Max semi-retired and Ken continued to operate the business. Ken and his wife, Jill, moved to Pocahontas from the Laurens location in 2000, where they settled and raised their family. Mike retired in 2015. Ken acquired Mike’s portion of the operation, with all locations becoming Powers Funeral Home. In November of 2020, Ken obtained Lampe Funeral Home of Lake City from Keith and Sherry Lampe, becoming Lampe & Powers Funeral Home.
